Guest Post: 5 Great Interior Design Apps

If you’ve ever taken on an interior design or remodeling project, whether as a professional or amateur, you know that it can be stressful. You find yourself either devoid of inspiration or drunk on it where you see inspiration in everything and want to incorporate a million bits and pieces that you’re sure fit together...somehow. Budgets are dashed to bits like a fragile crystal vase. Chaos ensues with samples of paint colors, fabric swatches, flooring tiles, and etc. multiplying at a ridiculous rate until they’re everywhere. It can be completely, 100% overwhelming, but guess what...there’s an app for that! Here are five free apps interior designers (whether your a pro or the average Joe) should know about:

Home Design 3D Currently available for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, Home Design 3D comes in a free and pro version. The free version does not allow you to save your work; however, it lets you play around with the tools available before deciding if you should upgrade to the pro version. With Home Design 3D you can create rooms with accurate dimensions including rooms that aren’t your traditional square or rectangular shape. Once you’ve created a room you can decorate it with different flooring options, paint colors, or wall textures (ex. exposed brick). In addition, you can add furniture to get a better feel for the space available.

Houzz Currently available for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, Houzz is inspiration in the palm of your hand. This app brings you over 325,000 photographs from interior designers and other industry professionals that are sure to help you or a client find just the look for that remodeling job. Photographs can be sorted by several categories including room and style. See something you just have to have? No problem, Houzz gives you information including price on certain items shown in the photographs. In addition, you can create “ideabooks” for future reference so you won’t loose those great pieces of inspiration. You can also share images via Twitter, Facebook, and email.

ColorSchemer Currently available for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, ColorSchemer puts the rainbow (plus more!) at your fingertips. This app gives you over a million different color palettes to work with and, if that just isn’t enough, you can create your own custom palettes using ColorSchemers tools. Every color has a hex value and RBG number attached to, so its super easy for you to duplicate any color. If you find (or create) the perfect palette you can “favorite” it or share it via email.

Note: You will need to sign up for COLOURlovers (100% free) in order to create a list of favorite palettes and to participate in the community.

Good Housekeeping @Home Currently available for Android, iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, Good Housekeeping @Home offers a collection of tips and ideas that are useful beyond any remodeling project. This app has tips on removing stains of just about every kind as well as cleaning pretty much every imaginable surface. If you’re looking for inspiration check out the “Home Decor Gallery”. The app also includes a section entitled “News & Tips” which offers information on everything from organization to speed cleaning to solving common computer problems.

Great free apps for interior designers don’t end there. If you’re looking for more tips, tricks, and tools consider checking to see if your favorite stores, television channels, and magazines offer an app. For instance, The Home Depot offers an app (currently available on Android, iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad) that lets you check store inventory, determine the size of a nut, bolt, or screw, and provides access to drywall, floor, insulation, and paint calculators. When it comes to finding amazing apps, the best thing to do is think outside of the box you’re designing!

Okay, so, interior designing and remodeling projects will probably still be stressful no matter what app you have. However, hopefully apps can make things a little simpler and add some fun back to the process. After all, you should be excited, you’re getting to express yourself and your lifestyle (or client’s) on one big canvas: Your home.
