I have a love-hate relationship with trendy design. I think trends are great, and I love the way they usually push the envelope and make us thing outside the box a little. However, trends can also go terribly wrong when not done right or.... as we can clearly see in Kourtney Kardashian's new home.... when they are completely overdone. Erin from Elements of Style first brought this home to my attention last week and I have been seeing these images everywhere since.
Her formal living room is like a trend explosion. There is so much going on that your eye doesn't know what to look at first. It's almost like everything in the room is trying to be special... therefore nothing is special. I really like the black and white with pops of color, but there is waaaaay too much pattern with the black and white. You gone need striped walls, a striped coffee table AND a chevron floor. And then that whole ceiling full of pendant lights, is just so overkill.
This Entry makes me cringe.... which is ironic, because the entry should be one of the most inviting spaces in your home, because it is the space that typically makes the first impression. I love the graphic stair runner... but its too much with the wallpaper AND the primary-color-art and sculptures. Artwork should NEVER be this matchy-matchy.
AGAIN with the stripes in this room. I actually like the stripes on the walls and ceiling... but I wish that was the main wow-factor in the room. With all of the other stripes and that horrible pleather sofa it looks more like a carnival fun-house than a foyer to me. I do LOVE the hardwood floor detail though. Did you even notice that through all of the chaos? Probably not.... but man that floor is amazing.
This office doesn't bother me as bad as some of the rooms. I think this room could be a real show stopper in a house where every room wasn't so full of 2013 trends.
I dont think this family room could be any less family-friendly. I get that the Kardashians love everything glam, but don't you think they would want the family room to at least be cozy. This chairs are super chic, but you would never want to curl up in one. The hand-painted wallpaper must have cost a fortune but I think it makes the walls look messy and cold.
I love that giant roman shade! I love how it coordinates with the draperies in the next room. But what is going on with this table? Again... this is the breakfast room, which should be more of a casual dining area, but there is nothing casual about it (except maybe the host chairs).
All I see when I look at this kitchen is "We spent all our money on flashy furniture and ran out before we could update the cabinetry.... so instead we slapped a busy wallpaper above them and called it a day." Don't get me wrong, I don't thing these cabinets are bad at all... but they don't fit with the rest of the house at all.
I love seeing trends executed well in but this house is just way too much. Dont be afraid when experimenting with trends but do be carful not to overdo it, otherwise you house will look dated about 5 minutes after you finish designing it.
