Lets talk about Stacked wood

I have been noticing a trend lately of homes having built-in places for wood stacks near the fireplace. Although I love the rustic look that the stacked wood gives to each room I have seen.... I have some doubts about this idea as well.

I grew up in a home with a wood burning fireplace and I just love the warmth and the atmosphere that an actual wood burning fireplace provides. It is definitely more work to keep firewood on hand and it can be a pain to have to go outside in the cold to get more wood, but I think it is worth it. As beautiful and convenient as I thin an indoor firewood stack would be.... I am worried that it would cause problems down the road. Wouldnt the wood on the bottom start to rot before you got through the stack? Doesn't a stack of wood sound like the perfect place for an insect infestation to start in your home?

These are some of the firct thoughts that come to mind when I se photos like these. I LOVE the look... but I worry about the actual functionality of an indoor wood stack. Of course we never see pictures in magazines or on Pinterest of someone with a rotting pile of wood in their living room....

Have any of you tried this idea? I haven't ever encountered a real-life indoor wood pile in anyone's home so I am wondering if it really is all its cracked up to be.

Don't get me wrong... I am all for keeping a stack of wood by the fireplace. But I think keeping a basket with several logs inside and having the large stack outside is more the way to go.

What are your thoughts? Have you seen this trend in action before? I would love your input!
