Oh Amsterdam.... where do I even begin? I absolutely LOVED Amsterdam even more than I thought I would. It is one of the most charming cities that I have ever visited. The way I would describe it is if Paris, Venice and Charleston all got together and gave their best parts to a city... it would be Amsterdam. Paris for the type of European feel of the city, Venice for the canals and Charleston for the charm and size of the city. I absolutely adored everything about it.
The canals added such a special touch to the city. Unlike Venice (where I felt a little trapped in a maze at times), the streets and sidewalks along the canals were lined with trees and were wide enough to take a in the architecture around me. The canal houses are so perfect - each is done in a different style and shade (within the same neutral tones of course), and each with a different roof line to give the row of buildings their own unique quality. I felt like all I did was take photos of architecture while I was there!
I think icing covered waffles might be my new obsession! It was all that I could do to limit myself to one a day.... seriously these treats are so delicious I may have to figure out a way to make them at home.
There were so many interesting cafes and restaurants... this particular one is located in the Pulitzer Hotel. The whole place was gorgeous and the interior design had me gazing around like a kid in a candy store. For more recco's on places to eat in Amsterdam check out my travel partner's blog (Blonde Atlas) in the next couple of weeks. She will be doing a city guide listing many of our favorite spots.
Can we just talk about how almost everyone in Amsterdam gets around on a bicycle?!? I WAS IN HEAVEN!! I am not kidding when I say that there were more bikes than cars. It was like a dream come true for a girl like me.... when can I move there?
We had the opportunity to take a boat cruise along the canals one afternoon. It was such a fun experience getting to see the city from a different point of view and hear more about the history behind many of the sites.
I loved everything about Amsterdam. It can get a bad reputation for a few reasons... but honestly, unless you go looking for anything scandalous, you wont see it. The city is beautiful and the people are so friendly. Even at the beginning of fall the city was full of flowers! I can only imagine what it looks like during tulip season - which I plan to go back for one day. Our time there was an absolute dream and I cant wait to go back!
