It’s funny to say that I probably love children’s books more now, as an adult, than I did as a child. Maybe love isn’t necessarily the right word… of course I loved them as a child, but I appreciate them more now. In part, I am sure that is because I now know what it takes to create and produce children’s book (ha! - more on that whole journey to come in another post) through publishing Bandit Goes On A Picnic (here). As a child, I wanted to be told stories…. which is essentially how Bandit and his adventures came to exist (read about the backstory (here). I wanted to be told a story so that I could image the characters and the scene in my own little mind rather than simply see what had been created for me on a page.
Now, I know that most kids are probably not like me… which is why so many FABULOUS children’s books exist and why reading with our children and teaching them to read and love books is so important! Even for me, that time spent with my dad in our imaginary world of Bandit was not only growing our bond but was also shaping and stretching my young, creative mind.
I love children’s books. Each one is its own unique work of art from cover to cover. The words are important, but so are the illustrations. Unlike novels and biographies and other types of books, in a children’s book - the words and pictures depend on each other.
I love knowing that Bandit now has the opportunity to play a role in another child’s life. I was raised on Bandit and grew up with him in a sense, and now there are children who I will never even meet who will get to know him too. So if you are planning to fill a child’s Easter basket this month I encourage you to put a book or two in there along with the chocolate bunnies and Starburst candies. Give a child in your life the gift of imagination and story telling. The gift of togetherness and the love of books! You wont regret it!
If you are interested in a personalized copy of Bandit I would LOVE to sign your book and send you a special set of Easter coloring pages too for your little one! (order here and request a note) There are SO many books that have become favorites of mine over the years so I encourage you to check out one of these from the list below as well!! The “What You Do Matters” trio is an all-time favorite of mine that kids and adults will both love!!
